Up and away to Mt Valluga …
A legendary reputation
Today we have an exciting excursion tip to share with you: Mount Valluga, the highest point in St. Anton.
It’s all about the spectacular journey. From the ultra-modern gondolas in the St. Anton am Arlberg ski area, you transfer to the rustic Vallugabahn II. The lift, with its small blue cabins, exudes a completely different charm compared to its newer counterparts. When it was completed in 1955, it was the highest cable car in Austria at the time. Once aboard, you can see its age – the journey feels like a nostalgic trip back in time. With just two small cabins, passengers are transported up Mt Valluga, the highest point in St. Anton. It’s a bit wobblier than what you’re used to with modern cable cars. But no worries: It’s well-maintained, regularly inspected, and absolutely safe.
After a two-minute ride, you reach the mountain station, which lies at 2,809 metres above sea level. Now it’s time: to enjoy the view. And what a view it is! The Lechtal and Allgäu Alps, the Verwall Mountains, the Ötztal Alps, and even the Swiss canton of Graubünden can all be seen from this vantage point.
Ready for an exhilarating descent on your skis? It’s really something for experts and should not be attempted without an official guide who is knowledgeable with the mountain. The steep, exposed slope and the rugged sections make the descent a real challenge. But those who have skied down the north face on powder snow or good spring snow conditions know: It’s worth it. It’s simply legendary. Both free riders and powder fans rave about the long, wide slope with its breathtaking views.
If swishing down on skis isn’t quite what you’re up for, board the cable car once again and enjoy a comfortable glide back to the valley We highly recommend a stop at the charming Valluga View Restaurant at the mountain station of the Valluga Cable Car I. Here, you can enjoy delicious food with a spectacular panoramic view.
